The Salt Mines and the Agricultural Laboratory

We begin at the mesmerizing Moray agricultural terraces, a series of deep, amphitheater-like depressions carved into the earth. These were once a sophisticated laboratory where the Incas experimented with microclimates to grow crops from across the empire. From there, we travel across the high plains to the ancient Salt Mines of Maras (Salineras). Here, over 3,000 salt ponds are nestled into the side of a canyon, fed by a single subterranean spring. This site has been harvested by local families for centuries using traditional methods, creating a sparkling white landscape that is a dream for photographers.
