"Every traveler who visits Arequipa stares at Misti in awe. But only a few can say they’ve looked back at the city from its smoking crater. This isn't just a climb; it’s a pilgrimage to the heart of a giant. No technical climbing, just a battle of will against volcanic ash and altitude. Are you ready to stop looking at the map and start being part of the landscape?"
Duration
2 Days / 1 Night
Difficulty
Strenuous / High Altitude
Max Elevation
5,825m (19,110 ft)
Day 1: Chasing the High Ground
We leave the comfort of Arequipa behind in our 4x4, climbing the dusty slopes until the road ends at 3,300m. From here, it’s just you and the mountain. We’ll trek for about 5 to 6 hours through volcanic sand and ancient paths to reach our base camp, "Nido de Águilas" (Eagle's Nest), at 4,500m. As the sun dips below the horizon, Arequipa begins to glow like a sea of lights far below. We’ll fuel up with a hot meal and sleep in the silence of the high Andes.
Day 2: The Crater’s Breath
The wake-up call comes while the stars are still out. Today is about rhythm and breath. We climb the steep volcanic serpentines as the sky catches fire behind the Pichu Pichu volcano. After a final push, the sulfurous scent of the crater welcomes you. Standing at 5,825m, next to the iconic iron cross, you’ll witness the massive active crater and a 360° view of the Andean range. The descent is a fast, fun "sand-skiing" slide down the volcanic ash—reaching the bottom in a fraction of the time it took to climb!
